High marks all around at Ashbury Golf Classic as golfers raise funds for student bursaries
If anyone were handing out report cards, the weather would have earned straight A’s at this year’s Ashbury Golf Classic, where 100 parents, alumni and supporters teed off under sunny skies on Monday in support of student bursaries.
Held at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Dunrobin, the annual tournament played out under picture-perfect, summer-like conditions, resulting in a memorable day on the course and a successful fundraiser for the school community.
Organizers expected to net roughly $40,000 for Ashbury College’s student bursary program, which supports more than 13 per cent of the school’s 750-student body, or about 100 students. Located in Rockcliffe Park, the independent school currently serves students from Grades 4 to 12 and will expand to include Grade 3 next year. Its graduates include leaders in business, politics and global institutions.
The presenting sponsor was Ashbury dad Graham Fallis, senior wealth advisor and portfolio manager at Rideau Wealth Group at Scotia Wealth Management.

For business leader Randy Stringer, the annual golf tournament is a chance to give back to the school that once supported him, so that other students can access the same life-changing opportunities he received through financial assistance. Although he couldn’t attend — he lives and works in the U.S. — he did sponsor a foursome for teachers and continues to volunteer on the school’s foundation board.
This year’s tournament was chaired by Ashbury mom Blair Dickerson, the vice president for public and corporate affairs in Canada for Domtar. Ashbury dad Matt Jacques, a commercial realtor with Royal LePage, later took the mic as emcee during the dinner and awards portion of the evening, and also served as live auctioneer.
Among the items up for grabs were a luxury dining experience at Harmon’s Steakhouse, a private dinner and cultural experience for six hosted at the official residence of Dominican Republic Ambassador José Blanco and his wife, and an insider sports experience with Canada’s women’s rugby team, including premium seats at their match against England this fall at TD Place in Ottawa.
Girls’ sports are enjoying growing participation and visibility, a trend reflected at Ashbury. The rugby experience was expected to be a hot-ticket item, drawing interest from bidders who had arranged proxies to compete on their behalf.
The tournament was something of a swan song for math teacher and golf coach Ross Holman, who’s been at Ashbury for more than 30 years. “It’s been a wonderful place to work because of the great people I got to work with and the students I got to teach,” he told CiTC.
